Dinosaurs

We are learning about dinosaurs that lived in Aotearoa. This week, we have been writing reports and painting pictures of them.

So far, we have watched YouTube clips about them and found some written facts. Did you know pterosaurs aren't actually dinosaurs? They are flying reptiles!

Pterosaurs

Pterosaurs are not dinosaurs. They are, in fact, flying reptiles. 

Did you know they were as big as a fighter jet and their wingspan was 10.6 metres? They had hollow bones and super, sharp teeth. Pterosaurs had hooked claws. That is weird but useful for not dropping prey in flight.

They lived from the late Triassic period to the end of the Cretaceous period.

Did you know that a young pterosaur is called a flapling?

Pterosaurs liked to eat fish and smaller things.

I think dinosaurs are cool.

Frida Kahlo

Towards the end of last term and beginning of this term, we have been learning about Frida Kahlo.  She was a Mexcian painter who painted self portraits. In her portraits, she usually painted herself with bushy eyebrows and moustaches. Did you know she had polio when she was 6 year olds and walked with a limp for the rest of her life? She was also in a bus crash when she was 18 years old. Her injuries were so severe that she spent many weeks in the hospital. She felt physical pain throughout her life. That's when she started to paint.

The painting tecniques we used were:

• to use both sides of the paintbrush
• to use long brush strokes
• to mix colours to create the colour we wanted

We used lots of colourful paints to paint her face. To make the flower(s) on her head, we used tissue paper. We folded the tissue paper back and forth like a fan. Then we stapled the middle and then fanned the paper out to make it look like a flower.

Tom Fedro Art

We have been studying Chicago artist, Tom Fedro. He creates art with zing and boundless humour. His art is innovative, creative and playful. He combines pop art collage and whimsical portraiture that has a rhythm all of its own. Bright colours, big features and bold lines that seem to be electrically charged represent an exciting way of seeing and experiencing the world through his eyes. 

Our Learning Intention: WALT use painting techniques.

Success Criteria:

Te Kurī a Pāoa

We have been been learning about Pāoa and Kiwa through art. When Pāoa and Kiwa came to Tairāwhiti, Young Nicks Head looked like Pāoa’s dog so they called it Te Kurī a Pāoa. Over time, soil erosion has made some of the rock erode. It wasn’t until Captain Cook came that it got called Young Nicks Head. 

A New Zealand graphic artist called Warren Pohatu was an author and illustrator of four books about Māori stories. We looked at his art and created our own Te Kurī a Pāoa. We had to overlay pastels, blend them and make colours we didn’t have by experimenting and mixing pastels. We also showed movement through detail.

Pop Art

We love creating our own masterpieces during Art. This week was a bit different because we created our own art using our chromebooks during our Cybersmart lesson.

First we looked at Andy Warhol's Pop Art and saw how he reproduced the same image but used different colours for each image. This inspired us so we took a selfie on our chromebooks and, using Lunapic, created our own masterpieces. We know that smart learners create original images and media so if we create it - we own it and can use it anywhere.

Henri Matisse Art

This week we have been learning some new painting techniques.
First, we looked at the artworks of Henri Matisse. To find out more about him, read our individual blogs.
Then we talked about what still life meant. Next, we drew Miss M's guitar and a vase. After that, we painted it. We had to mix the primary colours (red, yellow and blue) together to create the colours we wanted. We also had white and black. We layered and blended the paint. We also used white to show light direction. After our paint was dry, we used black pastel to add details.

Elephant Art

During Lockdown, Room 1 were set the task of collecting some of their recycling. They were keeping plastic milk bottles, coloured paper, magazines, newspaper, wrapping paper and Easter egg wrappers. 
After a couple of weeks collecting what we needed, we were set the task of turning our milk bottles into elephants. First we cut off the bottom of the handle so it looked like a trunk with a curve at the end. Then we cut off the bottom of the milk bottle and cut curves to create the legs. After that, we cut or ripped all of our recycled paper into squares. Finally, we glued all our pieces of paper onto the milk bottle. Some people added ears, some added eyes and some added a crown.
